What we accept and what we don't

What can I put in my compost bucket?

You can put any fruits and vegetables, meat & bones, bread & cereals, cookies & crackers, pasta, flour, rice & grains, coffee grounds beans & filters, loose tea leaves & tea bags, egg shells & nut shells, corn cobbs.

We don't accept

Any plastics, rocks, stones, wood, coal or charcoal ash, fats, oils & grease, diseased or insect- ridden plants, pet waste (dog or cat feces, soiled litter), bleached or toxic ink items, wipes, napkins or paper towels, diapers, wax, coated or colored paper, compostable foodware.

**DO NOT send in anything sharp, flammable, reactive, corrosive, ignitable, radioactive, toxic, infectious or pathogenic.

What types of hard-to-recycle plastics do you accept?

We accept plastic bags, bubble & shrink wrap, plastic straws & cups, food trays, polystyrene foam, candy & snack wrappers, dining disposables, yogurt cups, cereal bag liners, bottle caps, clamshell food containers, other plastic containers.

All items must be placed in the recycling bag. Place the bag inside of the recycling bin and securely closely the bags. Our drivers will not accept loose items out of the bag. Please empty and rinse all plastic containers before placing them in the recycling bag.

We do not accept

Non packaging plastics (electronics, toys, hangers etc.), containers with hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, fuels, acids or chemicals).

Do you accept all types of glass?

No, we accept only glass bottles and jars in any color and size (but not broken).

All items must be placed in the recycling bag. Place the bag inside of the recycling bin and securely closely the bags. Our drivers will not accept loose items out of the bag. Please empty and rinse all glass containers before placing them in the recycling bag.

We do not accept

Ceramics & Pyrex, light bulbs, computer and phone screens, windows and sliding glass doors, safety glass, car windshields, glass cups and tubes, broken bottles & jars.

Do you take plastic wrap and foam from fresh meat containers? What about the white pads in those containers?

Yes we accept plastic films and foam meat containers. We do not accept the pads in those containers.

Can you take my other recycling such as cardboard and glass? We don't have recycling in our area?

We do not collect cardboard. We do have a subscription option for glass, please click on glass subscription.

Can I just put my recycling in the bin without the bag?

No, all collected materials must be placed in the bags. We do not collect loose items.

Do I have to remove mailing labels from plastic packaging?

We would appreciate removing or cutting out any labels from packaging.

Getting Started

How do I sign up?

Click on the “Get Started” button under any service you may be interested in. This will take you through our signup process for TerraCycle Home services. Select the service, create an account, and start composting or recycling with us.

What is your ‘On Demand Zero-Waste-Box’ program?

Our award winning Zero-Waste Boxes offer households the option to recycle non-traditional waste such as batteries, PPE, coffee capsules, and many more items.

How It Works

How do the Recycling subscription services work?

All TerraCycle Home services are subscription based. Create an account and sign up for one, or multiple services, with no contract or minimum subscription length. Put your subscription on hold for vacation or travel plans.

All collections are on a bi-weekly basis. We will deliver bags and bins prior to the first pickup day. On subsequent pickup days, simply place your bagged recycling curbside by 9:00 am and our friendly driver will collect your items for processing.

How does the Composting subscription service work?

All TerraCycle Home services are subscription based. Create an account and sign up for one, or multiple services, with no contract or minimum subscription length. Put your subscription on hold for vacation or travel plans.

All collections are on a bi-weekly basis. On your first designated pickup day, we will drop off a collection bucket and biodegradable liner bag. Collect your food waste in the biodegradable bags, and store the bags in the 5-gallon collection bucket. On your pickup days, simply place your collection bucket curbside by 9:00 am and our friendly driver will collect your items for composting.

What happens to the recyclable items and the food waste after you pick it up?

TerraCycle Home guarantees that we recycle and/or compost all compliant materials that are collected. Recycled materials are received into our material recovery partners, where they are sorted into individual material components. Each material is then recycled into a raw material that can be used in a new manufacturing process. All food waste is taken to and processed by an accredited organic compost facility.

When can I expect my supplies after placing an order?

Your supplies will be delivered within 7 business days.

How often do you pick up?

All services are picked up every other week. Bins must be placed outside by 9:00 am.

What if I miss my pick up?

Please contact customer service to see if a pickup can be rescheduled. We will do our best to do so, but if another pickup is not possible, please hold onto your food waste or recycling until your next pickup date.

Is there a maximum amount of recycling or compost that I can put out each week?

All subscribers to one of our recycling services receive 1 bin. Compost subscribers receive 1 bucket. If you would like to recycle or compost more please contact us. support@terracyclehome.com

What if my bin or bucket is damaged?

How many bags can I have each month?

We provide 2 bags for each pickup. If you would like more bags you can order up to 4 bags per month here.

How is all of this recycled? Who recycles it and where?

All collected material is taken back to our facilities and then sent to our network of processors.

Billing and Cancelation

Do I have to sign up for an annual subscription?

No, TerraCycle home subscriptions are month to month, no contract!

How to cancel or pause subscription?

You can cancel or pause your subscription anytime. Simply log in to your account, select "My Subscriptions" from the top menu, click on the active subscription you want to cancel or pause. On the active subscriptions page click Cancel or Pause.

When do I get billed?

You are billed at the time of subscribing. Billing is renewed every 30 days thereafter.

If I cancel, how do I return the recycling and/or composting bins?

Once your cancellation is confirmed, please contact us contact@terracyclehome.com and we will schedule pick up of your recycling bin and or compost bucket.

I need to change my form of payment. How do I do that?

Simply log in to your account, select "My Subscriptions" from the top menu, click on an active subscription and click on the "Request update link in email" button.

We will send you an email containing the URL where you can securely change your payment method.

General Questions

Can I get soil back from my compost?

We are not offering this service at this time, however, based on demand we may look to do so in the future.

I use other TerraCycle services (i.e. Beauty, ZWB) Is that included in this service if i leave it out?

If you ordered your ZWB directly from the Zero Waste Box site then please follow the instructions given and mail it back accordingly. If you ordered your ZWB through TerraCycle Home then please leave it curbside during your next scheduled pickup. You can order ZWB’s here.

I have a business, school, church etc. and would like to participate. Can I?

I live in an apartment building. Do you service apartments as well?

Yes as long as your bin can be placed outside. We cannot collect inside of apartments.
